Target Information
The androgen receptor (AR) is a member of the steroid-hormone receptor superfamily of nuclear receptors. It is a ligand-activated transcription factor that binds active testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Upon ligand binding, the receptor translocates into the nucleus, dimerizes, and stimulates transcription of androgen-responsive genes.
AR signaling is essential for development and function of male reproductive organs (prostate, epididymis) and also plays roles in non-reproductive tissues such as muscle, hair follicles, and brain. It is a phosphoprotein that regulates MAP kinase pathways, and abnormalities in AR signaling are associated with diseases including prostate cancer, Kennedy’s disease, and male infertility. Mutations can lead to complete androgen insensitivity (CAIS).
