Target Information

Hepatitis B e-antigen (HBeAg) is a viral protein associated with HBV infections. Unlike the surface antigen, the e-antigen is found in the blood only when viruses are present. When the virus goes into “hiding,” the e-antigen will no longer be detectable in the blood.
HBeAg is used as a marker of infectivity and to monitor HBV treatment effectiveness. Successful treatment eliminates HBeAg and leads to anti-HBe antibody development. Some HBV strains do not produce e-antigen, common in the Middle East and Asia, where HBeAg testing may be less useful.
