Target Information
Guanylate cyclase-activating proteins (GCAPs) are calcium-binding proteins belonging to the calmodulin superfamily. GCAPs without calcium activate photoreceptor guanylate cyclase during light adaptation.
Studies indicate that Ca²⁺ addition or removal causes major conformational changes, leading to activation/deactivation of GCAP-1 and GCAP-2. Both act similarly on guanylate cyclase and share approximately 50% homology.
GCAP-1 is mainly localized in photoreceptor outer segments, while GCAP-2 is found in retina samples.
