Target Information
Nuclear lamins form a network of intermediate-type filaments at the nucleoplasmic side of the nuclear membrane. Two main subtypes of nuclear lamins can be distinguished: A-type lamins and B-type lamins.
A-type lamins include lamin A, lamin C, and lamin Adel 10, produced by alternative splicing of the same gene.
B-type lamins include lamin B1 and lamin B2, encoded by distinct genes.
Mutations in A-type lamins are associated with rare, dominant genetic disorders such as Emery-Dreifuss muscular dystrophy, dilated cardiomyopathy with conduction-system disease, and Dunnigan-type familial partial lipodystrophy.
A-type lamins are linked to cell differentiation and interact specifically with chromatin, suggesting a role in regulating differential gene expression.
