Target Information
Periostin (PN), also known as osteoblast-specific factor 2 (OSF-2), is a disulfide-linked protein originally identified as an osteoblast-specific factor.
It is a secreted protein that binds heparin and functions as a ligand for integrins αVβ3 and αVβ5. In preosteoblasts, Periostin acts as a cell adhesion molecule involved in osteoblast recruitment, spreading, and attachment.
Periostin is mainly found in the lower gastrointestinal tract, aorta, stomach, placenta, uterus, and breast tissues, and is upregulated in epithelial ovarian tumors and breast cancer.
Its expression is increased by BMP2 and TGF-β1. Periostin contains a signal sequence, a cysteine-rich domain, four fasciclin-like repeats, and a C-terminal domain.
