Target Information

MAPK8IP1 is a regulator of pancreatic beta-cell function and is highly similar to mouse JIP-1, which regulates c-Jun N-terminal kinase (MAPK8).
This protein inhibits MAPK8-mediated transcription factor activation and reduces IL-1β and MEKK1-induced apoptosis in pancreatic beta cells.
Additionally, it functions as a DNA-binding transactivator of glucose transporter GLUT2.
REST (RE1-silencing transcription factor) represses its expression in insulin-secreting beta cells.
Mutations in this gene have been associated with type 2 diabetes susceptibility.
