It plays essential structural and catalytic roles in various biological processes, including the formation of zinc fingers in DNA-binding proteins and the activity of metalloenzymes such as carboxypeptidases, alkaline phosphatases, dehydrogenases, and superoxide dismutases.
SLC30A4 (also known as ZNT4) is a member of the ZNT family of zinc transporters, responsible for transporting zinc out of the cytoplasm. These transporters share a common structure with six transmembrane domains and a histidine-rich cytoplasmic loop (Huang and Gitschier, 1997).
