Zinc is the second most abundant trace metal in the human body. It plays essential structural and catalytic roles in various biological processes, including the formation of zinc fingers in DNA-binding proteins and the activity of metalloenzymes such as carboxypeptidases, alkaline phosphatases, dehydrogenases, and superoxide dismutases.
SLC30A4 (also known as ZNT4) is a member of the ZNT family of zinc transporters, responsible for transporting zinc out of the cytoplasm. These transporters share a common structure with six transmembrane domains and a histidine-rich cytoplasmic loop (Huang and Gitschier, 1997).
