Product Specific Information

This antibody is predicted to react with mouse and rat based on sequence homology.

Target Information

Neuron specific enolase (NSE, also known as ENO1, ENO2, ENO3 or enolase alpha, beta, gamma) catalyzes the conversion of 2-phosphoglycerate to phosphoenolpyruvate in glycolysis and the reverse reaction in gluconeogenesis. NSE is stable in biological fluids and diffuses into cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) when neuronal membranes are injured. It is expressed primarily in neurons and neuroendocrine cells, often co-expressed with chromogranin A in neuroendocrine neoplasms.
Antibodies to NSE are useful for identifying neuronal cell bodies, developing neuronal lineage, and neuroendocrine cells. Release of NSE into CSF and blood serves as a biomarker of neuronal injury and is clinically used as a marker in neurological disorders such as stroke, hypoxic brain damage, status epilepticus, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and herpetic encephalitis. Elevated NSE levels are also observed in certain neoplasias, including pediatric neuroblastoma and small cell lung cancer.
