Target Information
AIRE is a transcriptional regulator protein that binds to DNA as a dimer or tetramer and may regulate gene expression. It is a nuclear protein of 545 amino acids containing an HSR domain, two PHD-type zinc fingers, and a SAND domain. AIRE can form homodimers, homotetramers, and nuclear bodies, and interacts with transcriptional coactivators CBP and CREBBP. Three isoforms of AIRE are known, one of which may be subject to nuclear-mediated decay (NMD). AIRE plays a key role in immune regulation and exhibits E3 ubiquitin ligase activity. Mutations in AIRE cause autoimmune polyendocrinopathy-candidiasis-ectodermal dystrophy (APECED), a rare autosomal recessive autoimmune disorder.
