Target Information
MUC1 (Mucin 1, Episialin, MAM-6, CA 15-3, PEM, EMA) is a large cell surface mucin glycoprotein expressed by most glandular and ductal epithelial cells and some hematopoietic cell lineages.
It is a transmembrane glycoprotein with a large mucin-like extracellular domain that undergoes proteolysis and extensive O-linked glycosylation.
MUC1 is highly polymorphic, with allelic variants containing 30–90 tandem repeats, leading to molecular weight variability.
It is abundantly expressed in over 90% of breast carcinomas and metastases, and interacts with EGFR and other erbB receptors in mammary tissues.
Aberrant expression and glycosylation of MUC1 are associated with various carcinomas. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified.
