Target Information
ERN1 (endoplasmic reticulum to nucleus signaling 1) encodes a serine/threonine kinase with endoribonuclease activity, acting as a sensor of unfolded proteins in the ER. It transmits unfolded protein signals to the nucleus by splicing XBP1 mRNA, converting it into a potent transcriptional activator of the unfolded protein response.
IRE1 is essential for cell viability under ER stress conditions; depletion or inhibition leads to apoptosis during stress. ERN1 also plays a critical role in extraembryonic cells, vital for fetal development.
