Target Information
Gemin 3 is a member of the DEAD box protein family characterized by the conserved motif Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp (DEAD) and are putative RNA helicases. These proteins are involved in cellular processes that alter RNA secondary structure, such as translation initiation, nuclear and mitochondrial splicing, and ribosome and spliceosome assembly. Some members of this family are associated with embryogenesis, spermatogenesis, and cellular growth and division. Gemin 3 exhibits ATPase activity and functions as a component of the survival of motor neurons (SMN) complex, playing a catalytic role in SMN complex function on RNPs. Dysfunction of Gemin 3 protein is linked to spinal muscular dystrophy and muscular atrophy.
