Target Information
The myocyte enhancer factor-2 (MEF-2) family of transcription factors associates with co-repressors or co-activators to regulate the development and function of T cells, neuronal cells, and muscle cells.
Four family members arise from alternatively spliced transcripts: MEF-2A, MEF-2B, MEF-2C, and MEF-2D. These members bind as homo- and heterodimers to the MEF-2 site in promoter regions of target genes.
Differential expression of these transcripts suggests functional distinctions during embryogenesis and development. Differentiation from mesodermal precursor cells to myoblasts has revealed various tissue-specific factors regulating muscle gene expression.
