Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein and 25% rRNA composition—opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA, and their protein components vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult. The MRPL15 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein belonging to the EcoL15 ribosomal protein family. A pseudogene corresponding to this gene is found on chromosome 15q.
