Target Information
The human lysozyme gene encodes an enzyme that hydrolyzes the β(1-4) glycosidic linkages between N-acetylmuramic acid and N-acetylglucosamine in bacterial cell wall peptidoglycan. Lysozyme acts as an antimicrobial agent found in human milk and is also present in spleen, lung, kidney, white blood cells, plasma, saliva, and tears. Missense mutations in the LYZ gene have been associated with heritable renal amyloidosis.
