Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a membrane protein similar to MHC class I-type proteins and associates with beta2-microglobulin. It is believed to regulate iron absorption by modulating the interaction of the transferrin receptor with transferrin. Mutations in this gene cause hereditary haemochromatosis, a recessive disorder of iron storage. At least nine alternatively spliced variants have been described, with additional variants of undetermined full-length structure.
