Target Information

CD2 (LFA-2) is a monomeric surface antigen (MW range 45–58 kDa) of the human T-lymphocyte lineage, expressed on all peripheral blood T cells. It is one of the earliest T-cell markers, found on more than 95% of thymocytes and some natural killer cells, but not on B lymphocytes.
Monoclonal antibodies against CD2 inhibit rosette formation with sheep erythrocytes, indicating that CD2 is the erythrocyte receptor or closely associated with it. The CD2–CD58 interaction stabilizes adhesion between T cells and antigen-presenting or target cells.
Although CD2–CD58 binding affinity is relatively low in solution, it provides strong adhesion within the cell-cell interface. T-cell activation increases CD2 expression and lateral mobility, enhancing contact with CD58 and strengthening intercellular adhesion.
CD2 deficiency reduces intestinal inflammation and aids infection control. Diseases associated with CD2 dysfunction include penis squamous cell carcinoma and immune deficiency due to thymus absence.
