Target Information
Beta-catenin is an adherens junction (AJ) protein involved in cell-cell adhesion and signaling.
- Functions in the formation and maintenance of epithelial layers by linking E-cadherin to the actin cytoskeleton via alpha-catenin.
- Interacts with cytoskeletal complexes and signaling pathways including tyrosine kinases, phosphatases, and Wnt/Wingless.
- Expressed in hair follicle cells, basal and peripheral matrix cells, and outer/inner root sheath cells.
- Implicated in various cancers such as pilomatrixoma, medulloblastoma, colorectal, ovarian, and other solid tumors.
- In the nucleus, beta-catenin co-activates Lef/Tcf transcription factors, stimulating genes like cyclin D and c-myc, promoting cell proliferation and tumorigenesis.
