This gene encodes a lysosomal protein that hydrolyzes the galactose ester bonds of galactosylceramide, galactosylsphingosine, lactosylceramide, and monogalactosyldiglyceride.
Mutations in this gene are associated with Krabbe disease (globoid cell leukodystrophy).
Alternate transcriptional splice variants encoding different isoforms have been characterized.
