Target Information

WIBG is a key regulator of the exon junction complex (EJC), a multiprotein complex that associates immediately upstream of exon-exon junctions on mRNAs. It serves as a positional landmark for intron-exon structure and directs post-transcriptional processes such as mRNA export, nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD), and translation. WIBG acts as an EJC disassembly factor, allowing translation-dependent removal and recycling of EJC. Its association with the 40S ribosomal subunit likely prevents translation-independent disassembly, restricting activity to translated mRNAs. WIBG interferes with NMD and enhances translation of spliced mRNAs, possibly by antagonizing EJC functions. RNA-binding has been observed in some studies (PubMed:14968132) but not others (PubMed:19410547), and its in vivo relevance remains unclear. [UniProt]
