Target Information
Scn5a is an integral membrane protein and a tetrodotoxin-resistant voltage-gated sodium channel subunit primarily found in cardiac muscle. It is responsible for the initial upstroke of the action potential in an electrocardiogram.
Defects in Scn5a are associated with Long QT Syndrome type 3 (LQT3) and Brugada Syndrome 1.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms.
Voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs) mediate cell membrane depolarization and electrical signal conduction in nerves and muscles. Expression of Scn5a is also detected in lymphocytes, glia, and fibroblasts.
Scn5a mediates voltage-dependent sodium ion permeability, forming sodium-selective channels that open or close in response to membrane potential changes. Channel inactivation is regulated by intracellular calcium levels.
