Background
Muscarinic cholinergic receptors are part of the G protein-coupled receptor family. Their functional diversity arises from acetylcholine binding, leading to cellular responses such as adenylate cyclase inhibition, phosphoinositide degeneration, and potassium channel mediation. These receptors modulate numerous acetylcholine effects in the central and peripheral nervous system. Although clinical implications remain unclear, receptor stimulation is known to increase cyclic AMP levels.
