Background
This gene encodes a type II classical cadherin from the cadherin superfamily, which are integral membrane proteins mediating calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion. Mature cadherins consist of a large N-terminal extracellular domain, a single transmembrane domain, and a small conserved C-terminal cytoplasmic domain. The extracellular domain contains five subdomains with cadherin motifs that determine homophilic adhesion specificity. Type II cadherins lack the HAV recognition sequence typical of type I cadherins. Cadherin-8 is primarily expressed in the brain and is implicated in synaptic adhesion, axon outgrowth, and guidance.
