Background
This gene encodes a classical cadherin from the cadherin superfamily. The encoded protein is a calcium-dependent cell-cell adhesion glycoprotein with five extracellular cadherin repeats, a transmembrane region, and a conserved cytoplasmic tail. Studies in chicken and mouse suggest its role in brain segmentation and neuronal outgrowth, as well as kidney and muscle development. Notably, cadherins 2 and 4 can form stable cis-heterodimers, marking the first evidence of cadherin heterodimerization. Three transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene (RefSeq, Nov 2011).
