Background
The IL-9 receptor is a cytokine receptor specifically mediating the biological effects of interleukin 9 (IL9). The functional IL9 receptor complex requires IL9R and IL2RG (a common gamma subunit shared by multiple cytokine receptors). Ligand binding activates JAK kinases and STAT proteins, leading to diverse biological responses. Genetic studies have associated IL9R with asthma development. Multiple pseudogenes have been described on chromosomes 9, 10, 16, and 18. Alternatively spliced transcript variants exist.
