Background
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the transmembrane 4 superfamily (tetraspanin family). Members of this family are cell-surface proteins characterized by four hydrophobic domains. These proteins mediate signal transduction events involved in cell development, activation, growth, and motility. CD53 is a cell surface glycoprotein that complexes with integrins and contributes to CD2-generated signal transduction in T cells and natural killer cells. It may play a role in growth regulation. Familial deficiency of CD53 is linked to immunodeficiency associated with recurrent bacterial, fungal, and viral infections. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
