Target Information

Mmgt2 mediates Mg(2+) transport and may provide regulated pathways for Mg(2+) transport in the Golgi and post-Golgi organelles of epithelium-derived cells. Magnesium is an essential metal, but few selective transporters have been identified. The two separate gene products, Mmgt1 and Mmgt2, comprise the family termed membrane Mg(2+) transporters (MMgTs), which reside in membranes and mediate Mg(2+) transport. Transport of Mg(2+) is saturable, and studies have shown Mmgt2 fusion proteins localize to the Golgi complex and post-Golgi vesicles, including early endosomes in COS-7 cells transfected with the respective tagged constructs. Related pathways for Mmgt2 include transport and binding events such as glucose and sugar transport, bile salts and organic acids, metal ions, and amine compounds.
