Target Information

Alpha-2-adrenergic receptors are members of the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily, including three subtypes: alpha2A, alpha2B, and alpha2C. These receptors regulate neurotransmitter release from sympathetic nerves and adrenergic neurons in the central nervous system. Studies in mice indicate that both alpha2A and alpha2C subtypes are essential for normal presynaptic control of transmitter release in the heart and central noradrenergic neurons. The alpha2A subtype inhibits transmitter release at high stimulation frequencies, while the alpha2C subtype modulates neurotransmission at lower nerve activity levels. This gene encodes the alpha2C subtype, which lacks introns in both coding and untranslated regions.
