Target Information

The FADS3 gene encodes a member of the fatty acid desaturase (FADS) family. Desaturase enzymes regulate the unsaturation of fatty acids by introducing double bonds between defined carbons of the fatty acyl chain. Members of the FADS family consist of an N-terminal cytochrome b5-like domain and a C-terminal membrane-spanning desaturase portion, both containing conserved histidine motifs. This gene is located in a cluster with FADS1 and FADS2 at 11q12–q13.1, likely resulting from gene duplication due to similar exon/intron organization.
