Target Information
The CD4 antigen is involved in the recognition of MHC class II molecules and acts as a co-receptor for HIV. CD4 is primarily expressed in T helper cells, but also found in monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells.
At the tissue level, CD4 expression occurs in thymus, lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen, and specific regions of the brain and gut.
It plays a key role in T-cell activation through association with the T-cell receptor complex and Lck kinase, and may mediate neuronal damage in immune-related CNS diseases.
Multiple alternatively spliced transcripts have been identified (RefSeq, July 2017).
