Target Information
Ep-CAM (epithelial adhesion molecule, also known as epithelial specific antigen, ESA) is a transmembrane glycoprotein (~40 kDa) expressed in epithelial tissues. It functions as a calcium-independent cell adhesion molecule influencing cell cycle, proliferation, and metabolism through induction of c-myc, cyclin A, and cyclin E.
Ep-CAM-mediated adhesions negatively regulate cadherin-mediated adhesions, affecting epithelial differentiation and growth. Overexpression is associated with enhanced epithelial proliferation and is observed in many human carcinomas, making Ep-CAM a marker for epithelial lineage tumors.
Ep-CAM is typically expressed on the basolateral surface of simple epithelia and various carcinoma types, and can distinguish adenocarcinomas from pleural mesotheliomas.
