Target Information
LFG (Lifeguard), a seven-transmembrane spanning protein, is a member of a family that inhibits apoptotic cell death induced by Fas receptor. It is a human homolog of rat NMP35 and contains a conserved transmembrane domain with a small cytoplasmic domain.
Studies show that LFG protects cells from Fas-mediated neuronal death without reducing Fas expression or interfering with FADD binding. It does not protect against TNF-alpha mediated cell death.
LFG is ubiquitously expressed, with higher levels in hippocampus and neural tissues, suggesting a protective role in neurodegenerative diseases.
