Target Information
This gene encodes a single-pass type I membrane glycoprotein with two Ig-like C2-type domains and an Ig-like V-type domain. It is a plasma membrane component of adherens junctions and serves as an entry receptor for certain mutant strains of herpes simplex virus and pseudorabies virus. It is also involved in cell-to-cell viral spreading. Variations in this gene have been linked to differences in multiple sclerosis severity. Alternate splice variants encoding different isoforms have been characterized.
