Zinc-finger proteins contain DNA-binding domains and have various functions, primarily related to transcriptional activation or repression. Most zinc-finger proteins have a Krueppel-type DNA binding domain and a KRAB domain, which interacts with KAP1 to recruit histone-modifying proteins.
ZSCAN22 (also known as HKR2 or ZNF50) is a 491 amino acid nuclear protein belonging to the Krueppel C2H2-type zinc-finger protein family. It contains eight C2H2-type zinc fingers and one SCAN box domain. ZSCAN22 may be involved in transcriptional regulation and becomes phosphorylated upon DNA damage.
