Target Information
Lactoferrin (LF) is an iron-binding glycoprotein composed of a single polypeptide chain (~80 kDa) folded into two homologous lobes, each capable of reversibly binding one ferric ion (Fe³⁺). It is present in external fluids such as milk and mucosal secretions and is a major component of neutrophil secondary granules.
LF exhibits diverse biological activities, including:
- Regulation of iron homeostasis
- Defense against microbial infections
- Anti-inflammatory activity
- Regulation of cellular growth and differentiation
- Protection against cancer development and metastasis
Lactoferrin functions as a first line of defense against microbial infection through iron sequestration and direct bactericidal activity. It can cleave arginine-rich sequences in microbial proteins.
Three isoforms (LTF-α, LTF-β, LTF-γ) are known, and receptors for LTF are expressed in the gastrointestinal tract, macrophages, lymphocytes, neutrophils, platelets, and some bacteria.
