Target Information
The MT-ATP6 gene encodes a protein essential for normal mitochondrial function. Mitochondria convert energy from food into a usable form through oxidative phosphorylation, producing adenosine triphosphate (ATP) — the primary energy source of the cell.
The MT-ATP6 protein is part of ATP synthase (complex V), which catalyzes the final step of oxidative phosphorylation. It facilitates proton flow across the mitochondrial membrane and drives the conversion of ADP to ATP.
