Target Information
Adiponectin is a protein hormone secreted exclusively by adipocytes that regulates lipid and glucose metabolism. It plays a role in homeostasis and obesity. Decreased levels are associated with obesity, insulin resistance, and hyperinsulinemia (type 2 diabetes). In mice, adiponectin enhances insulin signaling and reduces insulin resistance through activation of AMP kinase and PPAR-alpha, promoting fatty acid transport, oxidation, and dissipation in skeletal muscle.
