Target Information

Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, composed of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits contain 4 RNA species and about 80 distinct proteins.
The RPL8 gene encodes a ribosomal protein that is part of the 60S subunit and belongs to the L2P family. It is located in the cytoplasm and associates with 5.8S rRNA in rat, likely participating in aminoacyl-tRNA binding and forming part of the elongation factor 2-binding site at the ribosomal subunit interface.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein exist. As typical for ribosomal protein genes, multiple processed pseudogenes of RPL8 are dispersed throughout the genome.
