Cytochrome c oxidase (COX) family proteins act as the final electron donor in the respiratory chain, driving proton gradient formation across the inner mitochondrial membrane and producing water. The mammalian COX apoenzyme is a dimer composed of 13 subunits—both mitochondrial and nuclear.
COX5, located in the inner mitochondrial membrane, is a heme A-containing chain converting oxygen and hydrogen into water. Two isoforms exist: COX5a (aerobic) and COX5b (hypoxic). Under high oxygen conditions, COX5a transcription increases; under low oxygen, COX5b transcription is up-regulated to optimize COX enzyme turnover.
