Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder after Alzheimer’s disease, affecting about 1% of people over 65 and 3% over 75.
Synphilin-1 (Synuclein alpha interacting protein) interacts with alpha-synuclein in neurons and mutations in SNCAIP are linked to Parkinson’s disease.
It contains ankyrin-like motifs and coiled-coil domains, showing high homology with the human counterpart.
Synphilin-1 contributes to aggregate formation and cytotoxicity, and Dorfin may play a role in its ubiquitylation.
It is implicated in synaptic function, protein degradation, and neurodegenerative mechanisms in Parkinson’s disease.
