Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition—opposite to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ significantly among species, complicating recognition by sequence homology.
This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein with high sequence similarity to ribosomal protein S11P family members. A pseudogene corresponding to this gene is located on chromosome 20. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
