Target Information

The protein encoded by the RAB8A gene belongs to the RAS superfamily of small GTP/GDP-binding proteins (~200 amino acids). Members of the RAB/YPT family are involved in protein transport from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi and plasma membrane.
RAB8A shares 97%, 96%, and 51% similarity with dog RAB8, mouse MEL, and mouse YPT1 proteins, respectively, and contains four conserved GTP/GDP-binding sites typical of RAS proteins.
It also includes a C-terminal CAAX motif, characteristic of many RAS superfamily members but absent in most RAB proteins. Although initially isolated as a transforming gene from a melanoma cell line, no direct link between MEL and malignant melanoma has been demonstrated. The gene is located 800 kb distal to MY09B on chromosome 19p13.1.
