Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and function in protein synthesis within mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA ratio, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA found in prokaryotic ribosomes. The MRPS11 gene encodes a 28S subunit protein sharing sequence similarity with ribosomal protein S11P family members. A pseudogene is located on chromosome 20, and multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
