Target Information
Myofibroblasts are a unique group of smooth muscle-like fibroblasts that play an important role in oncogenesis, inflammation, repair, wound contraction, and fibrosis. Like smooth muscle cells, myofibroblasts contain microfilament bundles and express α-SM Actin, an actin isoform abundant in vascular smooth muscle cells.
Myofibroblasts secrete various cytokines, chemokines, growth factors, and extracellular matrix components involved in tissue remodeling. They are found both transiently during wound healing and constitutively in tissues such as skin, pulmonary septa, and periodontal ligaments.
Stem cell factor and platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) are key regulators of myofibroblast differentiation. The PR 2D3 monoclonal antibody reacts with cell membrane components of pericrypt sheath cells, smooth muscle cells, and myofibroblasts. It is considered the gold standard for identifying myofibroblasts.
