Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)는 신경 전달을 억제하는 강력한 억제성 신경전달물질로, 중추신경계 전반에 존재합니다. GABA는 글루타메이트의 탈카복실화로 형성되며, GABA-A 및 GABA-B 두 가지 주요 형태가 있습니다. GABA가 GABA-A 수용체에 결합하면 염소 이온의 세포 내 유입이 증가하여 신호 전달이 억제됩니다. GABA 결핍 시 신호 조절 불능으로 인해 경련, 발작, 간헐적 의식 상실 등의 신경학적 이상이 발생할 수 있습니다.
