Target Information

Azurocidin, also called heparin-binding protein (HBP), is an inactive homolog of serine proteinases residing in granulocytes. Initially it was thought to have activity only against gram-negative bacteria, but later it was found to act against gram-positive bacteria and C. albicans.
Azurocidin is a member of the polymorphonuclear leukocyte-derived antimicrobial proteins family, including defensins, LL-37, and lysozyme. It plays a role in activation and modulation of the immune response and may act to alarm the immune system.
The cationic domain of azurocidin is essential for its antimicrobial activity. It is stored in azurophil and secretory granules and released at the early stage of extravasation.
Azurocidin is involved in chemotaxis and activation of monocytes, cytokine release, and phagocytosis, leading to efficient bacterial clearance. Its primary targets are endothelial cells and the extravascular environment. Interaction with leukocytes occurs via beta 2-integrins.
High plasma levels of azurocidin may help identify patients at risk of developing sepsis.
