Target Information
SAGA (Spt-Ada-Gcn5 histone acetyltransferase complex) is a histone acetylase complex which has Gcn5p as catalyst subunit and functions overlapping with the fundamental transcription factor TFIID, which has Taf1p as catalyst subunit.
SAGA and TFIID have different roles in transcription regulation, contributing respectively to housekeeping and stress-responsive gene groups.
SAGA is a large protein complex composed of Ada proteins (5 kinds), TBP-related proteins (4 kinds), TAF proteins (5 kinds, also part of TFIID), and other protein groups (>6 kinds).
Its molecular functions include histone modification, recruitment of transcription regulators via direct DNA interaction, and control of transcription initiation by TBP.
Gcn5p, showing histone acetylase activity, is one of the Ada protein group members and in budding yeast consists of 439 amino acid residues.
