Target Information
Blood vessel epicardial substance (BVES), also known as Popeye protein 1, is a transmembrane protein involved in cell-cell interactions and adhesion, particularly at tight junctions.
It consists of an extracellular amino terminus, three transmembrane domains, and a cytoplasmic carboxyl terminus.
BVES is expressed in the developing coronary vascular system — notably in the proepicardium, migrating epithelial epicardium, delaminated vasculogenic mesenchyme, and vascular smooth muscle cells — where it contributes to heart, epithelial, and muscle cell development during embryogenesis.
It localizes at cell-cell contact sites such as filopodia and cell borders, promoting adhesion prior to E-cadherin arrival.
