Target Information
The PKC family of serine/threonine kinases, including PRKCA (PKC alpha), is activated intracellularly by signal transduction pathways. In humans, at least 12 different PKC isoforms have been identified, differing in structure, tissue distribution, localization, and substrate specificity. Conventional PKC isoforms (alpha, beta I, beta II, gamma) are Ca²⁺- and phospholipid-dependent. PKC family members phosphorylate diverse protein targets and are involved in numerous signaling pathways. They also act as receptors for phorbol esters, a class of tumor promoters. PKC alpha has roles in cell adhesion, transformation, cell cycle control, and volume regulation. Mouse knockout studies indicate it regulates cardiac contractility and Ca²⁺ handling in myocytes.
