Target Information
Eukaryotes produce three distinct classes of RNA polymerase: Pol I, II, and III.
- Pol I transcribes rRNA genes for the precursor of 28S, 18S, and 5.8S ribosomal RNA molecules.
- Pol II transcribes protein-coding genes into mRNA and snRNA genes into snRNAs, which influence RNA processing.
- Pol III transcribes 5S rRNA genes and all tRNA genes.
Each class of RNA polymerase consists of 9–15 different polypeptides. The RPB6 and RPB8 subunits are shared by all three RNA polymerases.
